Sir Liam Donaldson |
Sir Liam Donalson was appointed Chief Medical Officer of the United Kingdom in 1998. He became the 15th individual to hold the position. Prior to his appointment he was the Regional Director, National Health Service in the Northern Region. He was knighted in 2002, part of the new years honours list, attributable to his distiguished career in health care. He is arguably recognized as the leading voice in the world on patient safety and quality. Sir Liam represents the UK government at the World Health Assembly and was a member of the Executive Board of the World Health Organisation from 2002 to 2004. In 2003, Sir Liam proposed the establishment of a World Alliance for Patient Safety which was established by the WHO in October 2004. Sir Liam chairs the World Alliance. |

Pauline Philip |
Pauline Philip is the World Health Organization’s program lead for Patient Safety. "Pauline is effectively the Chief Executive of the [World Alliance for Patient Safety]," as described by Sir Liam Donaldson. Pauline is based out of WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. She has been working tirelessly with experts all over the world to promote best healthcare practices in relation to patient safety. |

The Meeting |
During a recent visit to the United States, Sir Donaldson and Pauline Philip sat down with Sorrel King and Jay King at Johns Hopkins Hospital, for a discussion on patient safety, including the patient's perspective, existing and future efforts by the WHO and the work being done by the Patient Safety Group and Johns Hopkins Medicine. Sir Liam and Pauline engaged in several high profile visits during their trip, including the launching of the Collaborating Center on Patient Safety Solutions in conjunction with the Joint Commission on Accredidation of Healthcare Organizations. |

The World Alliance for Patient Safety |
The World Alliance for Patient Safety aims to deliver six major action areas during 2005-2006:
- Global Patient Safety Challenge focusing on health care associated infection;
- Patients for Patient Safety involving patient oranizations and individuals in Alliance work;
- Taxonomy for Patient Safety ensuring consistency in the concepts, principles, norms and terminology used in Patient Safety work;
- Research for Patient Safety developing a rapid assessment tool for use in developing countries and undertaking prevalence studies of adverse effects;
- Solutions for Patient Safety promoting existing interventions in patient safety and coordinating international efforts to develop solutions.
- Reporting and learning generating best practice guidelines.

Sorrel King & Jay King |
Jay King and Sorrel King, who working with Johns Hopkins, developed eCUSP and The Patient Safety Group, spoke about the need for improved safety culture, executive involvement, accountability and the importance of a pro-active approach (as opposed to a re-active approach) to improvement that includes better communication,
collaboration and teamwork. |
